This unit focuses on using technology effectively to promote a campaign. The unit question is 'how can we effectively promote the campaign for Istanbul to host the 2024 Olympic Games?'
You will be creating a promotional video, focusing on a challenge or challenges that Istanbul faces in hosting the biggest global event and present the challenge as positively as you can. As you will be aware, Istanbul was one of the final three candidates left in the running to host the Olympic Games in 2020. The other candidate cities are Toyko and Madrid. To do this you will investigate how we advertise, study what makes an effective advertising campaign, compare and contrast existing Olympic promotional videos and go on a field trip to Istanbul to take footage for your own video.
On September 7th 2013, the final decision will be given by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The outcome of this will determine the content of the video you will produce. Let's hope Istanbul will win the bid!
Update: As we know know Madrid were eliminated in the first round after initially tying with Istanbul. The final round saw Istanbul and Tokyo left. After five attempts, Istanbul's brave bid fell short and it is Tokyo that will host the Olympic Games in 2020.
This unit also focuses on the ideals of the Olympic Movement. You will have a greater understanding of the global importance of bringing so many athletes from so many countries to one place to compete. It unites, encourages compassion, tolerance and understanding between people of differing countries and between cultures. It raises our awareness of global issues such as the environment and leaves a lasting legacy for generations to follow.
Students in the past have found the unit very challenging but ultimately relevant, timely and fun to do!
